Iyer made 19 runs in 26 balls before getting caught off a bouncer off Potts.
Having walked in at the fall of Cheteshwar Pujara’s wicket on 153/4, it seemed Iyer should’ve been supporting Rishabh Pant and looked good as he managed to stave off the initial barrage of bouncers and moved to 19 runs in 25 balls with 3 good-looking boundaries.
However, then he couldn’t keep himself from hitting a bouncer from Matthew Potts but didn’t manage to keep it down and the shot went straight to James Anderson at mid-wicket and had to walk back to the pavilion, leaving India 190/5.
However, it was a trap that was set by England coach Brendon McCullum, as cameras caught him signaling to the bowler to ball at his throat and make him fend the ball off his ribs.
Incidentally, McCullum worked closely with Iyer during the recent IPL 2022 tournament as he was the head coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Iyer captained the franchise. This meant the New Zealander knew the weaknesses of the Indian batter and used the same to his advantage.
Here is how he was dismissed:
