India came into the Edgbaston Test with few setbacks having lost the services of their regular openers KL Rahul to an injury and skipper Rohit Sharma to COVID-19, forcing the team to go for a fresh opening pair and captain on the eve of the Test which will conclude the series.

But the side has shown resilience before despite suffering selection setbacks, particularly in Australia in 2020-21 and that's what has been on show so far at Edgbaston as well.

Stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah lost the toss as Ben Stokes of England opted to bowl first. India were reduced to 98/5 under overcast skies with their last specialist batting pair at the crease in Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja.

The left-handers did not disappoint as they took on the responsibility of taking the team out of trouble with magnificent hundreds, adding 222 runs for the 6th wicket. Pant departed just before close of play on the first day for a 111-ball 146 while Jadeja was unbeaten on 83 with India at 338/7.

On the second day, Jadeja tried to farm the strike initially but then accelerated the scoring rate to complete his third Test hundred, second in 2022 and first away from home.

Jadeja brought out the famous 'sword celebration' as his teammates applauded from the dressing room. Former captain Virat Kohli was also clapping in jubilation as he had seen the rise of Jadeja as a Test batter under his captaincy.

He was eventually dismissed for 104 off 194 balls while trying to add some quick runs in company of the tailenders. The all-rounder is ranked number one in the ICC rankings for all-rounders and he showed why he's such a big asset for the Indian team, particularly in Test cricket.

India scored 416 in their first innings with captain Bumrah smashing 16-ball 31* - including a world record 29 runs in a 35-run over of Stuart Broad.
