Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was not a part of India playing XI for the first Test against England at Trent Bridge as all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was picked over him despite his experience of playing in the UK during his county stint.

The former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt in his latest YouTube video weighed in on the Ashwin vs Jadeja debate.

If India is looking at a better spin option, Ravichandran Ashwin is definitely ahead in the race. On the other hand, if one is seeking a three-dimensional player, Ravindra Jadeja has the edge.

If the surface looks like one that offers spin, I would go with Ashwin as well. He can bowl with the new ball too. Ashwin bowls odd lines and lengths and is brilliant at it. He can add value to the team and will be a wicket-taking option,Butt said in his YouTube video.

The southpaw then pointed out that spinners have always loved bowling at Lord’s but since Jadeja did not have much to do with his left-arm spin in Nottingham, Ashwin would be the right choice to go with for the second Test.

Historically, spinners have got wickets at Lord’s. Yasir Shah claimed a lot of wickets when Pakistan beat England there. Shane Warne also enjoyed bowling at this venue.

India has played quite a few matches at the venue as well, so they would be aware of what could be on offer. Jadeja played an outstanding inning in the previous Test and is an excellent cricketer. But if India wants to go with one spinner, Ashwin would be the right choice,” the 36-year-old signed off.

After the drawn first Test, England and India will be locking horns at the Home of Cricket, Lord’s in London from August 12.
