Thakur got Root LBW for 64 and also removed Ollie Robinson in the same over for a duck.
Root was looking good to reach the three-figure mark, but Thakur removed the England captain LBW and then went on to remove Ollie Robinson who was dismissed without troubling the scorers.
“It was cloudy for a while and I was really happy that we got 10 wickets. If you see he (Root) had played a few balls and he was playing really well and looked poised for a big score,” Shardul Thakur said after the end of play on Day 1.
“At that period, getting him out was crucial for us and we got him. Really happy (on getting Root's wicket). One of the top batters in the world, whether you get him in the 60s or 90s it's always a good wicket to have,” he added.

Team India decided to go in this first Test match in Nottingham with four fast bowlers in Bumrah, Shami, Siraj, and Thakur, and just the one spinner in Ravindra Jadeja.
When asked about this team selection, the right-arm said that the wicket didn’t look like it will spin and hence they decided to go with four pacers.
“If you look at the pitch it looked like it won't spin much and felt better to go with 4 pacers and one spinner combination. Enjoying the English conditions, it's swinging and hopefully, it will stay the same,” the 29-year-old said.
As far as the Test match is concerned, India managed to bowl out England with just 183 runs on the board and the Indian openers KL Rahul (9 off 39 balls) and Rohit Sharma (9 off 40 balls) made sure no wicket falls in the 13 overs they played at the end with India ending Day 1 at 21/0.
