Pakistan’s chances of qualifying for the ICC World Cup 2023 semi-finals took a nose-dive after New Zealand handed a comprehensive defeat to Sri Lanka in their last league game in Bengaluru on November 9.

Pakistan needed Sri Lanka to beat New Zealand so that they could then try and defeat England in their last league match and qualify for the semis. However, New Zealand’s win has resulted in almost impossible scenarios for Pakistan to make it into the top four.

Pakistan is still mathematically alive in the race for the semis. However, in a bid to go past New Zealand’s net run rate of +0.743, Pakistan needs to beat England by a colossal margin. The two sides will clash in Kolkata on Saturday and if Pakistan bats first, they have to defeat England by a massive margin of 287 runs or more.

The task becomes impossible if they are put to bowl first, Pakistan will have to chase down the target of 150 or more in 3.4 overs, 250 in 5.4 overs, and so on.

Discussing the same on Pakistan TV channel A Sports, legendary pacer Wasim Akram had a hilarious suggestion for the Pakistan team, on how they can defeat England and qualify for the semis.

The host on the show said that Akram had one other scenario in which Pakistan could still go on to qualify for the semis, which the legend had shared backstage.

"Wasim bhai gave the idea that Pakistan should bat first, then lock England up in their dressing room and get them timed out in 20 minutes to win the match," the host said.

Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who was also one of the experts on the show, had an even better idea to lock the English team even before the game starts.
