Sri Lanka sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe had sacked the entire SLC on November 6.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board received a major boost as Sri Lanka’s Court of Appeal restored the board officials for two weeks after SLC President Shammi Silva challenged the changes.
Earlier this week, Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister Roshan Ranasingha sacked the entire Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board after the team’s 302-run defeat against India in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
Ranasingha had reportedly formed an interim committee led by 1996 World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga to take control of SLC. However, the Court of Appeal on Tuesday (November 7) issued an interim order suspending the newly formed committee by the sports minister.
SLC President Shammi Silva went to the Court of Appeal against Roshan Ranasingha’s decision, and the court decided against the Sports Minister, but the order is only valid for 14 days, pending a full hearing.
A court official said, “The restoring of the board is for two weeks when the court will hear the case again.”
It is being said that Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe issued a warning to Ranasingha after he sacked the entire board and appointed the interim committee headed by Arjuna Ranatunga.
The Daily Mirror reported that the Sri Lankan President got to know about the suspension of SLC and the formation of an interim committee through the news.
Later, the President warned the Sports Minister that politicizing the SLC board could lead to Sri Lanka losing its ICC membership.
Notably, Sri Lanka was bundled out for a paltry 55 while chasing 358-run target against India at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium and lost by a massive 302 runs.
