Steve Smith regained his batting form during Australia’s crushing 309-run victory over Netherlands in Match 24 of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Wednesday (October 25).

Before this game, Smith was struggling for runs in the marquee event, registering scores of 46, 19, 0 and 7 in four innings. However, the right-hander turned the table against Netherlands as he slammed 71 off 68 balls with 9 fours and 1 six.

Smith's 132-run partnership for the second wicket with David Warner (104) laid the groundwork for Australia's gigantic total of 399/8.

After the game, Smith revealed that he had worked on a "couple of things" during net sessions a day earlier.

"I moved back to the leg stump a little bit. I got my hands a little bit higher than what they've been for the last week. For some reason, they've dropped down a bit. I just felt it in the nets yesterday and everything sort of clicked back into place again," Smith stated.

Talking about his recent form, the veteran batter said: "I felt like I was batting well a couple of weeks back against India. I thought I was actually getting back through the ball nicely on a pretty tough surface and playing well, and then for a week kind of lost it for a bit."

Smith reckons he has been batting well in the showpiece tournament, but got a couple of good balls in the previous games.

"I got a couple of nice balls, I suppose the one that swung back and got me out, and (Kagiso) Rabada's, which was a little questionable. I felt like I've been batting really well. I just needed to get the feel again."

It seemed that the little adjustment did wonders as Smith's form resurfaced. "Batting yesterday at the nets straight away I had a smile on my face at the back end. I felt good and took that into today and felt nice. I thought I was getting good positions today and yeah, hopefully that continues."

Smith looked set to hit a century before being Roelof van der Merwe took a sharp catch at backward point to dismiss him in the 24th over.

When asked about missing out on the hundred, the Aussie batter replied, "Yeah, it (hundred) would have been nice. I felt I was batting well. It was a nice partnership obviously with David and we were able to set it up for the guys to have a smack at the back end and get us up near 400 so."

Steve Smith was also effusive in praise of his teammate Glenn Maxwell, who took the Dutch bowling attack to the cleaners with a whirlwind knock of 106 in 44 balls. Maxwell took just 40 deliveries to reach his century, beating Aiden Markram's record for the fastest World Cup ton by 9 balls.

"Incredible, wasn't it? Some seriously good shots there... It was a pretty incredible effort," Smith said.

Australia’s next World Cup match is scheduled against Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in Dharamsala on October 28.
