Maxwell slammed a 40-ball century against Netherlands in Delhi.
Maxwell arrived in the middle during the 40th over and instilled fear among the Dutch bowlers with his outrageous strokeplay.
The Aussie swashbuckler completed his half-century off 26 balls and reached the three-figure mark in just 40 deliveries, surpassing Aiden Markram's record for the fastest World Cup hundred by 9 balls.
Maxwell was eventually dismissed in the final over for 106 off 44 balls. His knock, studded with 9 fours and 8 sixes, propelled Australia to a gigantic 399/8 in 50 overs.
"This one (Reverse hit) has got to be one of the greatest cricketing shots. It's gone for a six. It should be a 12. The bowling after that got a bit rattled because they just didn't know where to bowl. It was an incredible effort. He had an average of 12, to score the runs that he did and at the rate at which he did. It was amazing," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
"I took 40 balls to get off the mark. He has scored a hundred in 40 balls, amazing, amazing," he further added.
Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson also lauded Maxwell’s whirlwind display, saying that no bowler can bowl to him when he is in such a devastating mood.
"Just about everything (Was special). To be able to see the way he started off today after a disappointing knock against Pakistan. He learned from that, trying to launch the first ball into the stands. He was in control from Ball 1. And then once he put the foot down, like we have seen many times in his career, it's absolute madness, an absolute six fest," Watson told Star Sports.
"He can hit wherever he wants, no bowler can bowl to him with control. It's outrageous, absolutely show. Everyone was so lucky to be here today. He got his second fifty in 13 balls. It boggles your mind to realise that you can actually see something like that," he remarked.
