England are unlikely to have the services of their leading wicket-taker Reece Topley for the remainder of the World Cup 2023 owing to a suspected broken finger.

The defending champions suffered a humiliating 229-run thrashing at the hands of South Africa in Mumbai on Saturday (October 21) to put their semi-final hopes in jeopardy.

As if the embarrassing defeat wasn’t enough, England coach Matthew Mott confirmed Topley is unlikely to feature again in the ongoing showpiece event.

“We’re still waiting to confirm about Reece’s finger, it looks like it’s a crack, that’s an early diagnosis,” Mott told Sky Sports.

“It’s highly likely there’s a fracture there, which would make it difficult for him to keep playing.”

Topley, who has claimed eight wickets in three games, was hit on the index finger of his bowling hand when attempting to block a drive in his follow through.

The left-arm pacer’s career has been marred by injury concerns. He missed out on England’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign in Australia last year following a freak accident where he tripped on a boundary sponge on the eve of the tournament.

Jofra Archer, who was part of England’s 2019 World Cup triumph, joined the England squad earlier this week but he won’t be considered for selection.

“Jofra Archer is not going to be considered for selection,” said Mott.

Notably, Jofra has not played competitive cricket since May this year. Archer’s time in India is being seen by England primarily as a chance for their medical staff to assess his progress as he continues to recover from a longstanding elbow injury.
