Gill will miss India's next match against Afghanistan on Wednesday.
India opener, Shubman Gill, who missed the team's Cricket World Cup 2023 opener against Australia, has been hospitalized in Chennai after contracting dengue. He was admitted to Kaveri Hospital on Monday (October 9), and is currently under the care of medical specialists at the facility. Dr Rizwan Khan, Team India doctor, who was traveling with the side is also monitoring the cricketer's progress.
Gill's platelet count has fallen due to the dengue fever and that's the reason why he did not travel with the Indian team to Delhi for their second match against Afghanistan, which takes place on Wednesday. Medical advice given to the team management was to avoid making the opener travel due to his low platelet count.
The BCCI, on Monday, had issued a medical update on the Punjab batter, confirming that he would stay back in Chennai and continue his recovery, and that he was set to miss the Afghanistan match in Delhi.
"Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team's first fixture in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team's next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team," the BCCI statement said.
As per the Cricbuzz report, Gill was in his hotel room since arriving in Chennai on October 4, where he was being tested by the doctors from Kaveri Hospital. Not many team members had seen him, as he was resting and undergoing treatment.
Gill's availability for the high-octane clash against Pakistan on October 14, will depend upon his recovery at the hospital. Should there be a positive development, he could be discharged and return to his hotel room. If he gets the go ahead for onfield return, its likely he would fly directly to Ahmedabad.
India would hope to have the 24-year-old fully fit as the in-form batter plays his IPL cricket for Gujarat Titans and has a tremendous record at the Narendra Modi Stadium, which will host the marquee match between the arch-rivals.
