Tom Latham, who led New Zealand in the absence of Kane Williamson, won the toss and chose to bowl first. Apart from Williamson, New Zealand was also missing Tim Southee due to his thumb injury, and Ish Sodhi was not picked.
Jos Buttler revealed that Ben Stokes was not considered for this match as he is dealing with a hip niggle and they didn’t want to risk him so early in the tournament.
Matt Henry gave New Zealand an early wicket as he had Dawid Malan caught by Latham for 14 runs. Jonny Bairstow followed shortly after making 33. Harry Brook, who looked deadly with 4 fours and 1 six in his 25-run knock, was dismissed by Rachin Ravindra.
