India opener Shubman Gill is having a great time in international cricket this year, especially in the 50-over format.

In 20 ODIs, the lanky right-hander has aggregated 1230 runs at a staggering average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03 with five hundreds, which also includes a double ton against New Zealand.

Gill was the highest run-getter (302 runs) in the recently held Asia Cup 2023, which India won by defeating Sri Lanka in the final. He then exhibited his class in the three-ODI series against Australia at home, registering scores of 74 and 104 in the first two games that he played.

With the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 around the corner, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has tipped Shubman Gill to slam at least two centuries during the campaign.

“This tournament could be Shubman Gill’s. In all fairness, the tournament will belong to the top three batters. The good ones will make a lot of records. Shubman Gill will score a lot of runs. I feel he will score at least two hundreds; I won’t be surprised if he hits three as well. One of them could be a daddy hundred if he doesn’t get tired. Gill is a quality player and this World Cup could be his," said Chopra while speaking on his YouTube channel.

Thanks to his consistency, Gill has moved up to the second spot in the ICC Men’s ODI Rankings for batters. With 814 rating points to his name, the 24-year-old is trailing the top-ranked Babar Azam by just 43 points.

Mentioning his hundred against Bangladesh during the Asia Cup, Aakash Chopra lauded Shubman Gill for working on his struggles against left-arm spin.

“At one point of time, it seemed like he gets stuck against left-arm spin. But he showed he can take that on as well during his last hundred in the Asia Cup. It was his best ODI knock in my opinion," he stated.

India will begin their World Cup campaign against five-time champions Australia in Chennai on October 8.
