A day before Pakistan’s World Cup squad announcement, former skipper Mohammad Hafeez resigned from the PCB's Cricket Technical Committee.

The move came in the wake of a review meeting weighing up the national team’s dismal Asia Cup 2023 campaign.

Hafeez's decision to relinquish the post sparked debates over Pakistan's preparations for the World Cup, slated to get underway on October 5 in India.

PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf, captain Babar Azam, head coach Grant Bradburn, Chief Operating Officer Salman Nasser, Head of International Cricket Usman Wahla and former skipper Misbah ul Haq were part of the review meeting.

Notably, chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq was missing from the meeting, which further added fuel to the fire.

According to PTI, Inzamam decided to skip the meeting as he felt it was not the right time to do such an exercise.

“Inzamam is a very strong headed person and he didn’t agree with the move by Chairman Zaka Ashraf to call such a review meeting and make Babar and Bradburn face uncomfortable questions by Misbah, Hafeez and other board officials,” the source said, as quoted by PTI.

“Inzamam having been a former captain and top cricketer himself, made it clear he was not happy with the review process as this was the time to encourage and boost the team instead of putting them through an inquisition and showing distrust in their abilities.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan on Friday (September 22) announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup.

As expected, star pacer Naseem Shah wasn’t included in the side due to a shoulder injury he sustained in the Asia Cup Super 4 clash against India. Hasan Ali replaced Naseem in the squad.

There were doubts if Fakhar Zaman will make it to the World Cup squad given his poor form lately but the selectors showed faith in the senior opener. Young batters such as Abdullah Shafique, Saud Shakeel and Agha Salman also featured in the squad.

Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz and Usama Mir are the spinners in the side whereas Shaheen Shah Afridi will lead the Pakistan pace attack alongside Haris Rauf.

Pakistan will open their World Cup campaign against Netherlands on October 6 in Hyderabad.

Pakistan squad for World Cup: Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique, Babar Azam (capt), Mohammad Rizwan, Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Salman Ali Agha, Shadab Khan, Usama Mir, Mohammad Nawaz, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Hasan Ali

Travelling Reserves: Abrar Ahmed, Zaman Khan and Mohammad Haris
