Muttiah Muralitharan, legendary Sri Lankan spinner, has named his four favorite teams that can win the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2023 which starts from October 5, and included hosts India as one of his picks.

The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 will see New Zealand taking on defending champions England in the opening encounter on October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Hosts India will begin their campaign on October 8 against five-time champions Australia in Chennai.

Muralitharan said that India has the advantage of playing at home and will get support from their crowd wherever they play. He also named Australia, England, and Pakistan as other potential candidates to win the tournament.

"In this World Cup, the advantage is more to India and the reason is that it is a very good side. Then they have a home advantage; billion people positive waves, wherever you go you see Indian crowd and it gives a boost to the players….I think they are the biggest favorite and then Australia will be a favorite, England will be a favourite and Pakistan can also be a favourite. Four favorites, I am picking," said Muralitharan in a podcast with ANI.

Muralitharan also stated that to win a big tournament you need to have luck on your side, mentioning England's World Cup 2019 win.

"You have to have luck, it is important. England won the last World Cup out of luck or New Zealand would have won that World Cup,” he added.

Muralitharan was part of the 1996 World Cup-winning Sri Lankan team and played in the finals of the 2007 World Cup and 2011 World Cup, with the latter being his last international match.
