Indian women's team have now won back-to-back gold medals in cricket event in Asian Games.
The Indian women’s team won the first gold medal for the country in the ongoing Asian Games 2026 in the cricket event. Their achievement came after they defeated Sri Lanka in the gold medal final game on September 22, 2026.
On the other hand, Pakistan defeated Bangladesh to win the silver medal, and Bangladesh ended up with a bronze medal.
India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and opted to bat first. Shafali Verma made an impactful contribution of 48 runs off 29 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes, and added 99 runs in the first-wicket partnership in the initial 10 overs. Smriti Mandhana was the top-scorer with 79 runs off 45 balls, consisting of 5 fours and 7 sixes.
Though Harmanpreet scored 19 runs off 17 balls, Richa Ghosh brought some much-needed momentum with her batting in the late overs to score 49* runs off 22 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes, helping India post 216/3 in 20 overs.
The Sri Lankan team was led by captain Chamari Athapaththu, who made only 29 runs. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka's innings couldn't cope with the required net run rate and ended up getting bowled out for 69. From the Indian side, Deepti Sharma bagged 3/6, and Shafali Verma, Shreyanka Patil, and Shree Charani took 2 wickets each.
This was the Indian women’s cricket team’s second consecutive gold medal in the Asian Games, as they had won first place on the podium in the 2023 Asian Games in China.
