‘Completely useless thought’: Gambhir rejects Shastri’s suggestion of picking 3 left-handers in India’s top 7 for World Cup

Gambhir also shared his views on Tilak Varma's selection for the ODI World Cup 2023.

With less than 50 days left for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, experts are back with their opinions. Ravi Shastri, who was part of the World Cup-winning squad in 1983, recently opined that hosts India should go into the showpiece tournament with three left handers in their top seven.

However, India’s 2011 World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir has rejected the idea by terming it "useless".

According to Gambhir, the form and impact should be looked at while finalizing the squads for marquee events like the Asia Cup and World Cup.

"It is not important whether he is a left-hander or a right-hander. The debate that is going on that we need three left-handers is a completely useless thought. You look at the quality of the player and not how many left-handers you have. A good player whether a right-hander or left-hander will play well in every condition. So if Iyer plays well, or Rahul scores runs then pick them. It's not necessary to pick left-handers if they are not in form. I don't think there was any need to even start this left-hander debate. If you wanted left-handers then you have Yashasvi Jaiswal also. You always look at the quality and the form and not the quantity," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Gambhir also shared his two cents on promising left-hander Tilak Varma's selection for the Asia Cup 2023. The southpaw received his maiden ODI call-up after he performed well in his debut T20I series against West Indies earlier this month.

"If they have picked Tilak Varma then he should definitely get some games in Asia Cup. If he scores and plays well than some of the other batters then you should take that punt (for World Cup)," he added.

KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer’s selection was the highlight of India’s Asia Cup 2023 squad announced on Monday (August 21). Both players underwent surgeries earlier this year, followed by extended rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.

While announcing the squad, chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed that Rahul has picked up a fresh niggle, which might rule him out of the first few matches of Asia Cup.

Gambhir said Rahul and Iyer will have to score runs if they want to seal their spots in the World Cup.

"No one is a frontrunner when you aim to win the World Cup. Form is important, impact is important. The ones who are in form should be packed rather than the big names whether it is Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul or anyone. If Tilak Varma or SKY or Ishan Kishan is in better form than them they should be picked. Rohit has said that no one is guaranteed a spot. Iyer and Rahul are returning from injuries but they will need to score runs to get into the World Cup squad," he remarked.
