Kiran More suggested better options in place of Ashwin for Asia Cup 2022.
Former Indian chief selector Kiran More questioned the senior off-spinner R Ashwin’s inclusion in India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022, to be played from August 27 to September 11 in the UAE.
India included four spinners in their bowling attack for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022. They are Yuzvendra Chahal, Ashwin, Ravi Bishnoi, Ravindra Jadeja, and Deepak Hooda.
On the other hand, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, and Hardik Pandya will take care of the fast-bowling department, as Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel are recovering from their respective injuries.
Well, the former cricketer was happy with the overall selection for the upcoming multi-nation T20 tournament but expressed his surprise over Ashwin’s inclusion in the Indian squad.
He also felt the senior pacer Mohammad Shami should have made it to the India squad for the Asia Cup 2022.
Speaking to Star Sports, Kiran More stated: “Even I was surprised. How can Ashwin even come into this team? And every time. Even in the last World Cup, he was picked in the team and then did not play. Look at his IPL record, it is not that good.”
He added, “I really felt Shami should have taken that role or Axar Patel. And Axar has performed very well. Shami is my player and he will go to the World Cup. I want wicket-taking bowlers. Shami can pick wickets with the new ball, in the middle overs, and in the slog overs as well.”
