Bangladesh has now defeated 9 out of 11 Test playing nations.
Bangladesh scripted history as they defeated Pakistan for the first time in Test cricket on August 25, 2024. They achieved the feat in the first Test between the two sides which was played at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto had won the toss and had sent Pakistan in to bat first. Pakistan was reduced to 16/3 and 114/4, with Saim Ayub (56) and Saud Shakeel contributing 98 runs. But Shakeel (141) and Mohammad Rizwan contributed 240 runs for the fifth wicket, pulling Pakistan out of trouble.
Mohammad Rizwan scored 171* when Shan Masood declared the innings at 448/6d. In response, Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam scored 93 runs to anchor one end, while Mominul Haque added 50 runs as Bangladesh lost a few wickets.
But Mushfiqur Rahim anchored one end and formed important partnerships with Litton Das (56) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (77), propelling Bangladesh to 565. Rahim was out for 191 runs but provided Bangladesh with a crucial 117-run lead.
In their second innings, Pakistan appeared out of sync against Bangladesh's hitters. Only Mohammad Rizwan (51) and Abdullah Shafique (37) held their own against Bangladesh's bowling, which sliced through their batting lineup like a hot knife through butter.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz took 4/21, while Shakib Al Hasan took 3/44, as Pakistan was knocked out for 146. Bangladesh was set a target of 30 runs to chase, which they completed without losing a wicket and won by ten wickets.
This was Bangladesh’s maiden Test win over Pakistan after 14 attempts. They had lost 12 and drew one Test since their first meeting in 2001. With this win, Bangladesh has defeated 9 out of 11 Test-playing nations atleast once. The only teams Bangladesh has yet to beat are India and South Africa.
As a result, Bangladesh moved ahead of Pakistan in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 points table standings, winning their second game in five this cycle. Pakistan dropped to eighth place after their fourth defeat in six games this cycle, lowering their points percentage (PCT) to 30.55.
The teams will meet in the second Test at the same venue starting August 30.
Meanwhile, the cricket fraternity all praised the Bangladesh team and lauded them on their historic achievement of a maiden Test win over Pakistan.
