Australia will go into third Test at Leeds with a lead of 2-0, over England.
England resumed on day 4 on 114/4, with Ben Duckett on 50 with captain Ben Stokes for company. Duckett fell for 83 runs at the score of 177/5. And then shortly after Jonny Bairstow was controversially stumped by Alex Carey off Cameron Green.
Bairstow ducked under a short ball from Green and as Carey collected the ball, the England keeper moved out of his crease as it was the last ball of the over. But Carey threw the ball and managed to hit the stumps.
The Australians appealed and after a discussion, the decision was referred to the TV umpire, who ruled Bairstow out for 10 runs, leaving the batter bewildered and the Lord’s crowd booed the Australian side.
With no proper batter to come, Ben Stokes hit fifth gear and began hammering the Australian bowlers to all parts of the Lord’s ground giving them déjà vu of the 2019 Headingley Test knock.
He made 155 runs off 214 balls with 9 sixes and 9 fours to his name and added 108 runs with Stuart Broad, who made 11 runs in the partnership. Stokes was dismissed by Josh Hazlewood, ending England’s hopes of a miracle win.
England later folded for 327 runs and lost by 43 runs with Australia going 2-0 up in the five-Test Ashes series. For Australia, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood picked three wickets each.
Steve Smith was named Player of the Match for his 110 and 34 runs in the Test match. The third Test will be played from July 6 at Leeds.
The cricket fraternity was all praises for the Australian team’s brilliant win and lauded them on Twitter.
