Former Australia cricketers Justin Langer and Ricky Ponting have heavily criticized India opener Shubman Gill for taking a ‘direct dig’ at the TV umpire after his controversial dismissal in the India second innings of the WTC 2023 Final against Australia at the Oval.

Gill was out to a sensational catch at gully by Cameron Green. He plucked it with his left hand barely off the ground and scraped the grass. To check it was fair, the umpires asked for a review, and seven replays later they confirmed Green’s fingers were beneath the ball.

Shortly after, Gill cheekily tweeted emojis of magnifying glasses and a facepalm.

However, Langer and Ponting discussed this matter and said that one of the challenges for young cricketers will be social media.

One of the challenges now of a modern-day cricketer is there’s so much social media. The Gill tweet I think is a bit irresponsible shows some inexperience. This is the world we live in with social media,” Langer told Channel 7.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting said Gill’s tweet is a direct attack on the umpires.

Something is going to come of that. There will be some sort of fine, or maybe even a suspension. That is a direct crack at the umpire for the decision that they made. You can’t do that. The whole world was going to do that for him … he didn’t need to say a word,” Ponting said.

Shubman Gill had to face the consequences of his tweet, as he was reprimanded for breaching article 2.7, which relates to public criticism or inappropriate comment about an incident occurring in an international match.

And he was fined 15% of his match fees.

The young opener was fined a further 15% of his match fee, meaning he will have to pay back as part of his punishment given he has effectively incurred 115% of match fees in fines,” ICC’s statement read.
