Cameron Green catch to dismiss Shubman Gill sparked a debate on Day 4.
Chasing 444 to win, India scored 164/3 at stumps on Day 4, with Virat Kohli (44*) and Ajinkya Rahane (20*) unbeaten in the middle.
While India need 280 more runs, Australia have to take the remaining seven wickets to clinch the WTC title.
After the fourth day’s play, Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey said his team has posted enough runs on the board.
The Aussies declared their second innings at 270/8, with Alex Carey (66*) and Mitchell Starc (41) playing vital knocks on Day 4.
“I think we have the runs on the board, always look for more wickets, but they (Rahane and Kohli) played well. We’ll have another chance tomorrow,” said Carey to the broadcasters.
India opener Shubman Gill’s dismissal was the biggest talking point from the fourth day’s play. Gill edged a delivery from Scott Boland and Cameron Green, who was stationed at gully, leaped to his left to hold onto an inconclusive catch.
The on-field umpires went upstairs to check for a clean catch. After watching the reply from multiple angles, TV umpire Richard Kettleborough felt that Green’s fingers were underneath the ball and adjudged Gill out.
According to Carey, the right decision was made by the third umpire.
“Looked good to me (on the Green catch), we were happy and the right decision was made. It’s not great to see them scoring at 6 rpo (Runs per over), but we pegged them back, quick wickets does help and we’ll look for more tomorrow,” he stated.
The wicketkeeper-batter, who stitched a 93-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Mithell Starc, said the Aussies needed to be patient.
“I thought Mitch (Starc) played beautifully, attacked at the right moment and took the pressure off me. A tricky little period in the morning and we got over well. Class players, this is a good partnership, we need to remain patient, hit the right areas and hopefully the wickets will come,” Carey remarked.
