Bumrah went wicketless in the WTC 2021 final against New Zealand.
Former India cricketer and national selector Saba Karim was one of them as he felt the selectors went with reputation rather than current form with Jasprit Bumrah as had not played red-ball cricket since getting injured during the Australia series.
“I feel the selectors did not pay attention to the current form and went on with reputation to a certain extent. Jasprit Bumrah has not played red-ball cricket since he got injured in Australia,” Karim told India News.
There was a lot of talk about the right-arm quick as he went wicketless in both innings of the WTC final.
WTC 2021: Virat Kohli made a mistake but why blame him alone, says Arun Lal
“He has only played white-ball cricket and that too only the T20s. He did not play in the home series against England. I felt he was woefully out of form and along with that out of practice if we talk about red-ball cricket,” he said.
Even though Bumrah had not played a lot of Test cricket in recent times, Karim felt the pacer was getting his groove back in the second innings when he had a catch dropped off his bowling.
“To a certain extent, I felt he was getting back his rhythm in the second innings spell he bowled; he was also unlucky at times. But in the end, he couldn’t catch the length that is required in red-ball cricket, especially in conducive conditions, in the entire Test match,” the wicket-keeper batsman said.
After the WTC final, Virat Kohli and Co. will be taking on England in a five-match Test series slated to begin from 4 August.
