Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar said that WTC 2021 final between India and New Zealand is likely to end in a draw after rain washed out two days and if it happens ICC ought to devise the formula to pick a winner.

After a complete washout on Day 1 of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, the weather conditions once again played a spoilsport as Day 4 was abandoned due to incessant rain without a ball being bowled.

With only 141.1 overs being bowled in the match so far and with three innings yet to be completed it is almost certain that the match will end up in a draw as both sides are left with a maximum of 196 overs that also includes a reserve day for deciding a winner.

With two out of five days being washed out, many fans and pundits including former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed their disappointment. Talking to Aajtak, batting great Sunil Gavaskar admitted the WTC Final is likely to end in a draw, saying that this would the first time trophy will be shared in the final.

He while citing the example of other sports said that there must be a formula to pick a winner which ICC’s committee should think about and make a decision.

"It seems that the World Test Championship final will end up as a draw and the trophy will be shared. This will be the first time that the trophy will be shared in a final. In football, they have a penalty shoot out or they have some other method to decide a winner.

“In Tennis, there are five sets and there is a tie-breakerThere must be a formula to pick a winner in case of a drawn World Test Championship final. ICC's cricket committee should think and then make a decision," Sunil Gavaskar told Aaj Tak.

Coming to the match, Team India were bowled out for 217 runs as Kyle Jamieson’s fifer jolted the Indian batting line-up. In response, New Zealand was 101 for 2 with Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor at the crease at stumps on Day 3.
