The International Cricket Council’s (ICC) is monitoring the massive unrest in Bangladesh that has led to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and departure from the country.

The concern of the cricket’s governing body is understandable as the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 is scheduled to be held in Bangladesh from October 3 to October 20.

Notably, the unrest in Bangladesh is related to the contentious quota system that reserves 30 percent of jobs for families of veterans from the 1971 liberation war.

An interim government took over on Monday (August 5) as Hasina fled the country after protests turned ugly, resulting in over 100 casualties.

Amid the political turmoil in Bangladesh, India has emerged as a potential backup venue for the global event, Cricbuzz reported.

"The ICC is closely monitoring developments in coordination with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), their security agencies and our own independent security consultants. Our priority is the safety and well-being of all participants," an ICC spokesperson quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

The report further claimed that the ICC is expected to make an official decision within a week. UAE and Sri Lanka can also stage the tournament on short notice.

"All places with favorable weather will be in the mix if it becomes clear that we can't play in Bangladesh. That may or may not be the case," said an ICC member in the know of the developments.

The Women's T20 World Cup 2024 matches are slated to be held in Dhaka and Sylhet. The participating teams are scheduled to play 23 matches over 18 days.

However, under the current circumstances, staging the tournament looks difficult and ICC may opt for a country in the same time zone as Bangladesh.

The ICC will soon consult with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials on conducting the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup in Dhaka and Sylhet.
