In what can be called a major boost to women’s franchise T20 cricket, the top three boards in the world, the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI), England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and Cricket Australia (CA) are reportedly in plans of launching a Women’s Champions League next year onwards.

The Australian newspaper, The Age reported that Nick Hockley and Mike Baird, the Cricket Australia chief executive and chair, have been discussing the concept with their opposite numbers at the BCCI and the ECB in recent weeks, including meetings around the Lord’s Ashes Test and the World Test Championship final at the Oval.

A CA spokesperson confirmed discussions were ongoing with this newspaper as well, but declined to further comment on anything.

Australia and England have conducted successful leagues of their own in the Women’s Big Bash League and The Hundred respectively.

ICC announces equal prize money for men’s and women’s events

The inaugural Women’s Premier League in India brought in much-needed boost to the women’s cricket. The BCCI sold the broadcasting rights to Viacom18 for $ 116.5 million for the first five years and gave birth to the idea of the Women’s Champions League.

The three boards will share the broadcast rights revenue, just like they did for the men’s Champions League in 2008. The Champions League had to be shut down after six seasons owing to unpopularity with the viewers. Its revival is also not under consideration between the boards.

The three boards are considering starting the tournament with the top teams from their leagues, but there is a possibility of teams from other leagues being taken in the later editions.
