Shafali Verma scored 96 in her maiden Test innings for India.
Former Indian skipper Virender Sehwag has lauded the fearlessness of debutant opener Shafali Verma in the ongoing Women’s Test match between England and India.
India’s women cricketer Shafali Verma stole the limelight on her debut. The 17-year-old smashed 152-ball 96 runs in the first innings and stitched a 167-run opening partnership with Smriti Mandhana, who scored 78 runs, in the team’s first innings.
Shafali’s 96-run knock went in vain as visitors failed to go past England’s first innings total of 396 runs. However, after being forced to follow on, the swashbuckling batswoman once again set the stage on fire by scoring unbeaten 55 runs at stumps on Day 3.
ENGW v INDW 2021: “I will always regret it”, Shafali Verma rues missing hundred on Test debut
Although Shafali Verma could not smash a ton on her Test debut, many fans and pundits were all full of praise for her and even compared her batting style with former Indian skipper Virender Sehwag.
If this was not enough Virender Sehwag took to his Twitter account and himself lauded Shafali Verma for her fearless approach saying that he was delighted to watch her bat.
"Day one of #WTCFinal2021 called off but enjoying watching Shafali Varma in the #INDWvsENGW Test. A delight to watch the fearlessness," Virender Sehwag Tweeted.
Replying to England’s women first innings total of 396 runs, Mithali Raj-led Team India after the dismissal of Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana tumbled and were all out for 231 runs. At stumps on Day 3 Indian women were trailing by 82 runs with Shafali Verma unbeaten on 55 runs and Deepti Sharma not out in 18 runs.
