ENGW v INDW 2021: Cricket fraternity lauds Shafali Verma as she slams 96 on Test debut in Bristol

Shafali Verma also proved her mettle in red-ball cricket with a brilliant knock.

After establishing herself in India’s T20I team, teen batting sensation Shafali Verma also proved her mettle in the longest format of the game against England Women in Bristol on Thursday (June 17).

Featuring in her maiden red-ball match, Shafali provided the visitors with a brilliant start as she added 167 runs for the opening wicket with Smriti Mandhana (78). In particular, Shafali dominated the partnership, completing her fifty in 83 deliveries.

The 17-year-old continued her brilliance after the half-century and was looking set for a hundred, but she lost her concentration and skied one to deep mid-off while being on 96. Kate Cross dismissed Shafali and her 152-ball knock was studded with 13 fours and 2 sixes.

For her dazzling batting performance on Test debut, Shafali Verma garnered rich praise from the cricket fraternity on Twitter.

England fought back strongly with five wickets in the final hour after a big opening partnership for India. The likes of Punam Raut (2), Shikha Pandey (0) and Mithali Raj (2) were dismissed cheaply as the tourists finished the second day on 187/5 in reply to England’s first innings total of 396/9 (declared).
