India hammered Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the title clash at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the Indian women's cricket team on Monday (September 14), following their historic Women's T20 Asia Cup 2026 victory.
The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side secured a dominant 72-run victory over Sri Lanka in the final held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday (September 13), marking their record-extending eighth Asia Cup title.
The Women in Blue remained undefeated throughout the tournament, cruising past the group stage and dismantling Bangladesh in the semi-final.
Taking to X, PM Modi called the triumph a "proud moment for Indian cricket" and praised the team's confidence, consistency, and spirit.
“A proud moment for Indian cricket! Congratulations to the Women’s team on winning the Asia Cup. Their confidence, consistency and remarkable spirit were on full display throughout the tournament. May this triumph inspire millions of youngsters across the country to play more and shine,” he posted.
Coming to the final match, India posted a formidable total of 183/5 in 20 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat. The foundation was laid by a sensational, record-breaking 129-run opening partnership between Shafali Verma (68 off 39 balls) and Smriti Mandhana (59 off 39 balls).
Sri Lanka's response never truly gained momentum against a disciplined Indian bowling attack, and they were bowled out for 111 on the final ball of their 20 overs. Left-arm spinner Shree Charani was the pick of the bowlers, tearing through the middle order to finish with outstanding figures of 4/20. She was brilliantly supported by off-spinner Deepti Sharma, who claimed 3/19.
With this resounding victory, India successfully avenged their defeat against Sri Lanka in the 2024 Asia Cup final.
