Bumrah picked 15 wickets while Arshdeep took the most 17 scalps in T20 WC.
India pacer Arshdeep Singh had an excellent outing in the T20 World Cup 2024, where he finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker with 17 scalps to his name. India won the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating South Africa in the final in Barbados on June 29.
Apart from Arshdeep, Jasprit Bumrah was one of the primary reasons for India’s T20 World Cup win. Bumrah picked 15 wickets in the tournament at economy of 4.17 and earned the Player of the Tournament award.
Together, Arshdeep and Bumrah bowled excellently well with the new ball at the start and then came back to choke the opposition in the death overs as well.
Arshdeep Singh revealed that Bumrah wasn’t just plotting the dismissal of batters off his bowling during the competition but also helping out his teammates in setting up fields that would fetch them wickets.
He recalled a suggestion Bumrah made to him during India’s Super 8s game against Afghanistan, that got him a wicket.
“Afghanistan ke against jo match tha usme ball reverse ho raha tha kaafi. Toh unhone kuch field suggest kiya tha – ye fielder peeche lega toh ball wahin jayega, chances bohot zyada hain kyunki ball kaafi reverse ho raha tha. Toh main thoda disagree kiya ki ye waala fielder upar rakhna zaroori hai wahaan par ball nahi jaata hai. (Against Afghanistan, the ball was reversing. So he suggested a field change, asking me to place a man in the deep predicting that the batter will hit the ball over there since the ball is reversing. I disagreed and said the ball won’t go there),” Arshdeep told Sportstar in an interview.
However, Bumrah was persistent and asked Arshdeep to have faith.
“Toh unhone bola ki mujh par bharosa rakh fielder peeche bhej aur tu apna ball daal. Toh maine daala wo ball, thoda baahar gaya aur edge lag kar fielder ke haath mai chala gaya wahan pe. Toh unhone bola ki tujhe mujh par bharosa rakhna hai. Result tujhe ache milenge bus tu apni best ball daal. Phir mujhe laga ki haan yaar jo bhi bol rahe hain mujhe manna hai aur apna ball daalna hai. (So he asked me to trust him. I did and the ball went a little wide. The batter got an edge and the ball flew straight to the fielder (suggested by Bumrah). So Bumrah told me to have faith in him and good results will follow. Then I realized that whatever he’s telling me, I should follow and do my best),” he said.
Both Arshdeep and Bumrah were rested for India’s tour of Zimbabwe and remains to be seen whether either of them will be picked for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.
