“Not a sign of good leader,” Dinesh Karthik slams Babar Azam for throwing his teammates under the bus after loss to USA

Babar was particularly critical of his bowlers after Pakistan suffered an unexpected defeat against USA.

Pakistan’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign got off to a terrible start as they suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of USA in Super Over in Dallas on Thursday (June 6).

The nail-biting encounter saw both teams ending their innings at the identical score of 109, necessitating the one-over eliminator, where the Men in Green conceded 18 runs as left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir struggled for accuracy and ended up bowling quite a few wide deliveries.

Saurabh Netravalkar starred with the ball for USA in the Super Over, allowing Pakistan to score 13 runs while picking the wicket of power-hitter Iftikhar Ahmed.

After the game, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam said they were unsatisfactory with their batting towards the end of the match, having failed miserably in the powerplay.

Babar was also critical of his bowlers, saying that they were not up to the mark in the first six overs and spinners failed to do the job in the middle overs.

However, Babar's public criticism of his players wasn’t well received by former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Karthik said a skipper needs to be diplomatic while addressing the media and should find ways to support his players instead.

"As a leader, you need to find a way to be diplomatic in press conferences, somehow find a way to back your players. Inside the four walls of the dressing room, you can say what you want and have a go at a few people, but you need to find a way to back your players. It's one thing to be honest, another thing to try to understand the team dynamics," Karthik stated.

"He's newly appointed a captain. A lot of players are vulnerable right now, and he needs to back them. He needs to say, 'yes, it was a bad day. We probably could've done certain things better, but we will make sure once we get on a roll, we have special players'. That's the kind of language. To state that we didn't play well in the first six overs, we lost too many wickets... it's stating the obvious," he added.

According to Karthik, Babar's comments in the presser would have an adverse impact on the Pakistan players ahead of their highly-anticipated clash against arch-rivals India on June 9.

"I fear Pakistan players reading it, which they will be, will feel he's 'letting us down'. The way he's conducted himself at the field, having a go after the boundaries or his shoulders dropping, isn't a sign of a good leader.

"He needs to find a way to find body language to suggest he's fine with whatever's happening, and they can come around. Yes, showing disappointment is fine, but there's a way to show it where the players don't get even more nervous than they already are."
