Shami hasn't played a T20I for India since T20 World Cup 2022.
Like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul, Shami hasn’t played any T20I cricket for India since the semifinal loss against England in Adelaide in the 2022 T20 World Cup.
The BCCI selectors have instead focused on young stars and starting afresh in the shortest format of the game since IPL 2023. The fast-bowling unit has seen the likes of Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, and Mukesh Kumar amongst others taking charge.
With the T20 World Cup fast approaching, Ajit Agarkar and his selection committee are yet to make it official on who stands where in the scheme of things. Even a few of the players are unaware of whether they are in the plans of the selectors.
Mohammad Shami is one of those players who is in the dark about his T20I future for India. He is currently recovering from an ankle injury and missed the last two T20I series India played- against Australia at home and against South Africa recently.
Shami, however, feels that a good performance in the 2024 IPL season could force the selectors to consider his position in the World Cup side.
“Whenever it comes to T20s, many times I don't understand whether I am in scene or not. But what I feel is that you have IPL before the T20 World Cup and that is the best opportunity to bring in momentum, and if management will ask me to play, I’ll be available,” Shami said to India Today.
He has played 23 T20Is for India and has taken 24 wickets with a best of 3/15 and an economy of 8.94.
