The West Indies team's humiliating defeat against Ireland on Friday (October 21) cost them a spot in the Super 12 round of the T20 World Cup 2022, and Ricky Skerritt, president of Cricket West Indies (CWI), expressed his deep disappointment following the ouster.

Skerritt stated that he could relate to the sheer frustration that some fans are experiencing as a result of their early exit.

West Indies, arguably the most dominant team in the shortest format and the two-time T20 World Cup champions, were defeated by Scotland and Ireland, causing them to exit the competition in Round 1 for the first time ever.

Skerritt blamed the team's terrible performance, in part, on the batters' failure to score runs.

"I am deeply disappointed with the performance, and results of our team in Australia, and I appreciate the sense of utter frustration that is being experienced by many. The ongoing inability of our batsmen to prevail over opposing slow bowling continued to be an obvious weakness in Australia, and untimely shot selections seem to be deeply embedded in the T20 batting culture of our senior team," he said in a statement from CWI.

He did, however, assure everyone that there will be a ‘thorough post-mortem’ of the World Cup fiasco.

"However, I want to assure stakeholders that a thorough postmortem will be carried out on all aspects of our World Cup preparation and performance and that solutions will be found in keeping with CWI’s strategy to improve the quality and sustainability of cricket on all fronts, and in all formats.

"West Indies cricket is bigger than any one individual or event, and continues to need the input and support of all stakeholders," he added.

On Friday, Ireland after being asked to bowl first, did a magnificent job to restrict Nicholas Pooran and Co. to a below-par 146/5 in 20 overs.

The Irish team appeared to be in complete control during the entire chase as they swiftly crossed the finish line with 9 wickets in hand.
