Wasim Akram and Brett Lee, among other former cricketers, voiced their disbelief at express pacer Umran Malik's absence from Team India's T20 World Cup 2022 lineup. Former India bowling coach Bharat Arun is the most recent to express a similar kind of reaction.

Arun was not pleased that Team India has named 3 spinners in their T20 World Cup 2022 squad. He argued that Malik, who took the cricketing world by storm with express pace, could have replaced one of the spinners in the squad.

“Umran Malik is exciting, he’s got the pace. And given the right kind of fields he’s done pretty well in the IPL,” he said on Wednesdays with WV (Raman).

Besides Deepak Hooda whose off-spin too can come in handy, Team India has chosen 3 proper spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Akshar Patel. Arun remarked that 3 spinners are “too many” keeping in mind the pace-friendly conditions in Australia.

“Yes there is bounce, the grounds are big spinners that have a very important role in Australia but I think three spinners are too many. Because at any given point you would be playing just one spinner in the team and you have the choice of two spinners in the side,” he stated.

Rohit Sharma and his men will play 2 warm-up matches against Australia and New Zealand on October 17 and 19 respectively.

Their actual campaign will begin on October 23 when they take on arch-rivals Pakistan at the iconic MCG.
