After Team India's disappointing Asia Cup 2022 campaign, all eyes are on the BCCI selectors with the squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 set to be announced by next week.

Ahead of the selection meeting, former India opener Virender Sehwag has slammed the Chetan Sharma-led committee for ignoring veteran pacer Mohammad Shami from the T20I side and claimed that the team will need his experience during the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Notably, Shami's last T20I appearance was against Namibia in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup last year.

"It's a wrong thought process (about Shami not being in T20I plans). Two years ago, even (Ravichandran) Ashwin wasn't in your plans. But if your two bowlers were injured, you could have picked Shami for his experience in the Asia Cup," said Sehwag on Cricbuzz.

"When Avesh was unavailable, Shami would have played. I understand you want to give youngsters a chance, but in Australia you also need experience. Shami will be handy on those fast pitches," he added.

While playing for Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2022, Shami claimed 20 wickets in 16 games. However, he failed to reclaim his place in the Indian T20I team.

Even though Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel couldn’t feature in the Asia Cup 2022 due to injuries, Shami was still not recalled to the T20I side.

Mohammad Shami has played 17 T20Is for India, picking up 18 wickets at an economy rate of 9.55.
