West Indies and Bangladesh locked horns in the 23rd match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Friday (October 29).

Both the teams came into the game after two consecutive defeats in the Super 12 phase, and the defending champions managed to beat Bangladesh by three runs in a thriller to register their first win.

Asked to bat first, West Indies posted 142/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Nicholas Pooran was the top scorer with 22-ball 40 while Roston Chase contributed 39.

In reply, Bangladesh lost Shakib Al Hasan (9) and Mohammad Naim (17) cheaply before the duo of Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar added 31 runs for the second wicket to steady the ship.

After Sarkar’s dismissal on 17, Liton Das forged a 30-run stand with Mushfiqur Rahim, who contributed only 8. Rahim’s wicket led to skipper Mahmudullah’s arrival in the middle and he stitched 40 runs for the fifth wicket to put Bangladesh in a strong position.

Needing 21 runs in the last two overs, Bangladesh scored 9 in the penultimate one but lost the key wicket of Liton Das for 43-ball 44 and West Indies heaved a sigh of relief.

While Mahmudullah (31*) was still at the crease alongside Afif Hussain, Andre Russell comfortably defended 13 runs in the final over despite a dropped catch and misfield, conceding only 9 and restricting Bangladesh to 139/5.

Cricket fraternity enjoyed the thrilling contest between the two sides and shared their views on Twitter.
