South Africa got off to a terrible start in their opening game of the Super 12 phase.
Amid the anticipation, the Super 12 phase of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 finally got underway with the clash between Australia and South Africa in Abu Dhabi on Saturday (October 23).
Asked to bat first, South Africa scored 11 runs from the first over of Mitchell Starc. However, they failed to build on it as Glenn Maxwell drew the first blood for Australia in the second over, dismissing skipper Temba Bavuma for 12.
An over later, Josh Hazlewood got rid of Rassie van der Dussen (2) to reduce South Africa to 16/2. Just when the Proteas were hoping for a crucial partnership, veteran batter Quinton de Kock got out quite awkwardly in the fifth over.
De Kock was attempting a cheeky shot off Hazlewood after shuffling across the off-stump, but he failed to make the connection as the ball lobbed off his body, looped into the air and then bounced right onto the stumps.
Here’s the video:
Quinton de Kock was dismissed for just 7 and South Africa found themselves reeling at 23/3 after 4.1 overs.
