Shanaka also said Sri Lanka needs to improve their fielding as well.
Sri Lanka might have registered a big win over Ireland to continue their winning streak in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, but the skipper Dasun Shanaka is worried over the poor show by his team’s top-order in the multi-nation tournament.
On Wednesday, October 20, Sri Lanka thrashed Ireland by 70 runs in their second group stage match in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2021, thanks to Pathum Nissanka (61 runs off 41 balls) and Wanindu Hasaranga (71 runs off 47 balls), and collective stunning bowling efforts in Abu Dhabi.
With the massive win over Ireland, Sri Lanka has qualified for the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup. The Islanders are currently leading Group A on the points table while Scotland in Group B with 4 points and will next take on the Netherlands on Friday (October 22) in the T20 World Cup 2021.
Coming to Sri Lanka’s top-order, Kusal Perera lasted just two balls while Dinesh Chandimal and Avishka Fernando were also dismissed cheaply against Ireland, leaving the side 8/3 in just 10 balls.
Nissanka’s score reads 5, 61, Perera could manage 11, 0, while Chandimal 5, 6, and Fernando made just 30 and 0 so far in the ongoing T20 World Cup, which raised serious concerns over Sri Lanka’s top order ahead of Super 12 stage of the global tournament.
Shanaka in the post-match presentation: “We were a bit worried. The top-order has been a little concerning for us. We had a plan before the World Cup to send Hasaranga up the order.”
The skipper also stressed that the Islanders need to improve the fielding apart from batting.
He signed off by saying, “It is a great luxury to have quick pacers. They are accurate as well. Credit to the coaches as well. We need to improve at the top-order and on our fielding as well.”
