Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag said he could never understand why Yuzvendra Chahal was excluded from the Indian squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, especially after his stunning display for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in an IPL 2021 contest against Mumbai Indians (MI).

In the 39th game of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday (September 26), Chahal returned with the excellent figures of 3/11 in 4 overs to help Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by 54 runs in Dubai, UAE.

Notably, Chahal didn’t find a place in the Indian cricket team as R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Rahul Chahar, and Akshar Patel were picked for the T20 World Cup 2021, but Sehwag feels the leg-spinner can fit into any team and he should have been named in the national squad.

Sehwag on Cricbuzz after RCB vs MI game: “I could never understand why he was not selected. Some sort of a reason should be given, whether he is out of form or if there seems to be someone who is better and does extraordinary bowling. It is not like we saw Rahul Chahar do that. I just couldn't understand why Chahal was dropped; he can fit into any team.”

The former opener added, “It's not that Chahal was doing something different in these last two matches. He has been doing the same as he does all the time. He did the exact same thing in Sri Lanka. He knows how to bowl in this format.”

He further said Chahal and Glenn Maxwell, who registered the figures of 2/23 along with playing a knock of 56 off 37 balls against MI, were the real match-winners for RCB against Mumbai on Sunday.

Sehwag signed off by saying, “Today it was Glenn Maxwell and Chahal who made this game for RCB with the wickets they took in the middle overs. Because at one point it did look like Mumbai has such a deep batting lineup, they should be able to chase this easily.”
