Former England captain Michael Vaughan has lauded BCCI's decision to appoint MS Dhoni as the mentor of the Indian cricket team for the 2021 T20 World Cup. Calling it the 'greatest decision' by Indian cricket in T20, he said India would need Dhoni considering his ability to make wise decisions.

India's cricket body announced Dhoni's role when the squad for the T20 World Cup was picked. BCCI secretary Jay Shah said that Dhoni showed keen interest to contribute to the Indian team when he approached the former India captain with the proposal.

Vaughan talked about Dhoni's mastery in making the right decisions and gave the example of his calls during Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2021 on Friday (September 24).

"If you look at the CSK batting line-up, they change it depending on the pitch and who is bowling. MS Dhoni realized that Maxwell is going to bowl again, and so, CSK threw a right-hander. That is smart cricket, and that is being flexible with your batting line-up," he said in a chat on Cricbuzz.

Dhoni had quit international cricket last year and he only plays IPL which makes him available for the new role with the Indian team. Vaughan is confident that Team India would benefit a lot with Dhoni's addition to the showpiece ICC tournament.

"You have got the greatest ever T20 captain (Dhoni), and there was a bit of a commotion when he was put as the mentor for the T20 World Cup. Why would India want MS Dhoni in that role? It is the greatest decision ever that the Indian T20 team has made. You need that kind of brain in that dugout. Dhoni is a natural at what he delivers," concluded Vaughan.
