Samson earned the Player-of-the-Tournament accolade for playing three clutch knocks.
The wicketkeeper-batter wasn’t part of India’s XI at the start of the competition but shone with Player-of-the-Match exploits against the West Indies (97* off 50 in a must-win Super 8 fixture) and England (89 off 42 in the semifinal) before making the highest individual score in a Men’s T20 World Cup final with 89 (46 balls) against New Zealand.
Samson finished he competition as the third highest run-getter, amassing 321 runs from just five innings at an average of 80.25 and a remarkable strike rate of 199.37.
Reflecting on Samson’s redemption journey, legendary Sunil Gavaskar said the Kerala lad had transformed adversity into the defining moment of his career.
“Life has come full circle for Sanju Samson,” quoted Gavaskar while speaking on Star Sports.
“Before the 2026 T20 World Cup, he had a terrible series against New Zealand. He was dropped, then after the T20 World Cup started, he got a chance to play against Namibia, but his knock wasn’t enough to keep his spot.”
After India’s loss to South Africa in the Super 8s, Samson returned to the playing XI for the Zimbabwe game at Chepauk and didn’t look back.
“He next played directly against Zimbabwe in the Super 8, but his real redemption began against West Indies in a virtual quarter-final,” Gavaskar stated, before adding that such performances in high-pressure situations define a cricketer’s legacy.
“These games decide your fate and will define his career. Playing clutch knocks in high-pressure games takes something special,” he remarked. “To have the scar of failure and then play the best knocks of your career in three back-to-back high-pressure games — that is Sanju Samson.”
With this triumph, the Men in Blue became the first team to defend their T20 World Cup title, win the trophy on three occasions and win on home soil.
Commenting on the magnitude of India’s achievement, Gavaskar said: “Winning ICC trophies is not easy. Bilateral dominance is different. ICC tournaments have zero margin for error. Winning the T20 World Cup back-to-back is a massive achievement. This is the best moment in Indian cricket history.”
