India became the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times.
Mitchell Santner, the New Zealand captain, had won the toss and asked India to bat first. However, the choice backfired as India amassed a massive 255/5 in 20 overs thanks to half-centuries from Ishan Kishan (54), Abhishek Sharma (52), and Sanju Samson (89).
In response, New Zealand only managed 159 runs and lost the final by 96 runs, despite 52 from Tim Seifert and 43 from Mitchell Santner. As India successfully defended their T20 World Cup title and became the first team to win the competition three times, Jasprit Bumrah took 4/15, and Axar Patel claimed three wickets.
Before the T20 World Cup 2026 began, Sunil Gavaskar committed to the Indian squad and Suryakumar Yadav. The Indian star, known for his post-game celebrations, assured Suryakumar that he would dance with delight if the team were able to defend their title.
“When you lift the trophy and receive it, I will start dancing. Dancing is my cardio. Everyone else does intense cardio, but I can’t do that at my age. So, I do a little bit of cardio, and that’s dancing. There’s so much joy in seeing your captain and your country’s flag going up. Sometimes emotions just come out,” Gavaskar had said.
On Sunday, March 8, Gavaskar kept his word. Initially, shortly before the presentation, the Indian legend was spotted dancing, which was filmed by broadcasters.

Not only this, but Sunil Gavaskar was also seen dancing with India captain Suryakumar Yadav when the Men in Blue were taking a victory lap of the ground. Gavaskar decided to shake a leg with Suryakumar, and the Indian skipper obliged.

Following the T20 World Cup victory, Gavaskar praised Suryakumar as a leader that everyone looks up to in the dressing room and was modeled after Rohit Sharma.
"He's such a calm, cool, collected captain, pretty much in the mold of Rohit Sharma. Always smiling, always positive in his attitude and his approach. He started by saving India from an awkward situation against the USA, scoring 84. He's clearly the leader, and everyone looks up to him," said Sunil Gavaskar to India Today.
