India is the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times.
India was asked to bat first by New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner, who won the toss. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson looked cautious for a couple of overs, but then pummelled the Kiwi bowlers. Abhishek Sharma fell for a 21-ball 52. Samson was then joined by Ishan Kishan, who slammed 54 in 25 balls.
Sanju carried his golden form, hitting 89 with 8 sixes and 5 fours, while Shivam Dube’s 8-ball 26* took India to 255/5 in 20 overs.
In reply, India did well when Axar Patel dismissed Finn Allen for 9 and Glenn Phillips for 5 runs. Tim Seifert waged a lone battle at one end, scoring 52 in 26 balls, but the Kiwis lost wickets regularly at the other end.
Though Daryl Mitchell (17) and Mitchell Santner (43) tried to bring the New Zealanders back in the game, Jasprit Bumrah happened, as his 4/15 ensured the Kiwis were bowled out for 159 runs.
India won the final by 96 runs and became the T20 World Cup 2026 champions. They became the first team to win the title at home and the first team to defend the T20 World Cup successfully.
After the match presentation ended, India skipper Suryakumar Yadav walked over to ICC chairman Jay Shah and took the T20 World Cup trophy from him. The Indian team celebrated in an energetic way as he lifted the trophy high in the air, with confetti and fireworks going off.
