Team India’s amazing unbeaten streak in ICC events came to an end at the hands of South Africa when they met in the Super 8s stage of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026 on February 22, 2026. This game was played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Proteas captain Aiden Markram won the toss and chose to bat first. This was the first time India was asked to bat second in the T20 World Cup 2026 tournament.
Indian bowlers started well as Arshdeep dismissed Aiden Markram, while Jasprit Bumrah accounted for Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton, leaving South Africa 20/3 in 4 overs. But then David Miller and Dewald Brevis stemmed the fall of wickets with a 95-run partnership.
Brevis made 45 in 29 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes. Miller made quite an impact with a counter-attacking 63 in 35 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes. Tristan Stubbs gave South Africa the perfect finish with 44* in 24 balls with 1 four and 3 sixes as the Proteas made 187/7 in 20 overs.
Jasprit Bumrah took 3/15, while Arshdeep Singh took two wickets for India.
In response, India had a terrible start, with Ishan Kishan making 0, Tilak Varma making 1, and Abhishek Sharma making 15 runs, his first runs in T20 World Cups after three ducks. Suryakumar Yadav failed to take India out of trouble as he fell for 18 runs, while Washington Sundar, who was picked over Axar Patel, made 11 runs.
Shivam Dube (42) and Hardik Pandya (18) tried their best to get the Indian innings on track, but a combination of a slowing pitch and amazing bowling by South Africa resulted in India being bowled out for 111 runs. South Africa won by 76 runs, ending India’s unbeaten streak in T20 World Cups and also handing them their second-biggest defeat by runs in T20Is.
Marco Jansen took 4/22, while Keshav Maharaj took 3/24 as South Africa began their Super 8s with a big win over the co-hosts.
The cricket fraternity was stunned at the way India lost the game, unable to give a proper chase. They also lauded South Africa for its brilliant overall game on social media.
