India's domination over Sri Lanka in the ODI series came to an end as for the first time since December 1997, the Men in Blue failed to clinch victory in a bilateral series against Sri Lanka after the hosts stunned them by 32 runs in the second ODI in Colombo on August 4.

Sri Lanka made 240/9 thanks to 40 runs each by Kamindu Mendis and Avishka Fernando, while Washington Sundar took three wickets and Kuldeep Yadav scalped 2 victims.

India began their pursuit strongly, with Rohit Sharma (65) and Shubman Gill (35) scoring 97 runs in 13.3 overs for the first wicket. But once they were out, the remaining Indian hitters struggled against Sri Lankan spinners.

Jeffrey Vandersay, in particular, had his best ODI statistics of 6/33, while Charith Asalanka claimed three wickets as India were bowled out for 208. Only Akshar Patel made it through with a score of 44, including four fours and two sixes.

During Indian innings, Virat Kohli was involved in a controversy in which he survived an LBW dismissal thanks to DRS. On the last ball of the 15th over, Kohli attempted to work the off-break from Akila Dananjaya down the leg side off the back foot, but the ball beat the inside edge and smashed his pads. Sri Lanka made a vociferous appeal, and the umpire agreed without hesitation, raising his finger.

However, when Kohli requested a review, the UltraEdge revealed that there was a spike when the ball came near to the bat, prompting TV umpire Wilson to reverse the decision. Sri Lankan players and coach Sanath Jayasuriya were stunned after Kohli was given not out and showed their displeasure.

Later, after the end of the match, as Kohli approached the Sri Lankan unit for the customary post-match handshake, he was stopped by Jayasuriya. The two had a small intense chat before both patted each other's shoulder and moved on.
