The second ODI between India and Sri Lanka saw the hosts defeat Men in Blue by 32 runs to go 1-0 up in the three-match series with one match to go. The first ODI in Colombo had ended in a tie on August 2nd.

Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka won the toss in the second match as well on August 4th and chose to bat first. Sri Lanka posted 240/9 in 50 overs with Kamindu Mendis and Avishka Fernando top-scoring with 40 runs each. For India, Washington Sundar took three wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav took two scalps.

India started their chase well with Rohit Sharma (65) and Shubman Gill (35) adding 97 runs in 13.3 overs for the opening wicket. But once they got out, the rest of the Indian batters struggled against Sri Lanka spinners.

Particularly Jeffrey Vandersay, who registered his best ODI figures of 6/33, while Charith Asalanka took three wickets as India folded for 208 runs. Only Akshar Patel managed to withstand with a score of 44 with 4 fours and 2 sixes.

During India's innings, a controversy took place involving Virat Kohli. On the final ball of the 15th over, an Akila Dananjaya delivery caught Virat Kohli just in front of the stumps, and the umpire raised his finger over the Sri Lankan players' LBW appeal.

Kohli chatted with non-striker Shubman Gill before going upstairs. A review forced the third umpire into a difficult decision. This is because the UltraEdge detected a spike as the ball crossed Kohli's bat before striking his pad, yet the images revealed that there was a significant gap between the bat and the ball at the moment.

The third umpire ruled it in favour of Kohli and this left the Sri Lankan fielders as well as their interim head coach Sanath Jayasuriya frustrated.

The decision was not well received by the Sri Lankan players. Kusal Mendis was frustrated and threw his helmet to the ground, while Asalanka communicated his unhappiness to the on-field umpire, Raveendra Wimalasiri. Sri Lanka's coach, Sanath Jayasuriya, also stepped down from the dressing room to debate the judgment with the reserve umpire.
