India batter Devdutt Padikkal alertly convinced his partner KL Rahul to review an LBW decision during the morning session on Day 4 of the Galle Test against Sri Lanka, saving him from an early dismissal as India pushed their commanding second-innings lead past 240.

Rahul was adjudged LBW off Prabath Jayasuriya in the 11th over, but non-striker Padikkal immediately urged him to challenge the umpire's decision.

Replays showed the ball missing the stumps due to height, leading to a relieved Rahul giving Padikkal a big hug in the middle.

After the on-field decision was overturned, Rahul continued his innings but he failed to make it count and was eventually dismissed in the 15th over for 35 runs.

Coming to the match, India posted 462 runs in their first innings courtesy of a maiden Test century by Devdutt Padikkal (167).

In reply, the hosts were bowled out for 284, despite a resilient sixth-wicket partnership between Niroshan Dickwella (80) and Sonal Dinusha (100).

Manav Suthar claimed four wickets and Ravindra Jadeja took three as the visitors earned a substantial 178-run first-innings lead at stumps on Day 3.

India's intent was quite apparent on Day 4. After Yashasvi Jaiswal departed in the first over for a duck, Padikkal and Rahul added 65 runs for the second wicket to put Sri Lanka on the backfoot.

Devdutt Padikkal, who slammed his maiden Test century in the first innings, scored 44 runs in the second essay before being dismissed. At the time of writing, India were 112/4, extending their lead to 290 runs.
