Both Jaiswal and KL Rahul were left stranded at the non-striker’s end.
India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was run out for 32 in a highly dramatic and unusual fashion on Day 1 of the opening Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium.
During the 11th over of India’s first innings, KL Rahul drove a flighted delivery from Sri Lankan debutant spinner Keshara Nuwantha straight back towards mid-on and called for a quick single.
Nuwantha dived across to intercept the ball but ended up colliding heavily with Jaiswal at the non-striker's end, knocking the left-hander completely off balance and onto the floor.
Unaware of Jaiswal's fall, Rahul sprinted halfway down the pitch. When the southpaw finally got up, he initially took a step forward as if to complete the run, which prompted Rahul to keep running.
However, Jaiswal suddenly changed his mind and scrambled backwards. This ultimate breakdown in communication left both batters standing at the non-striker’s end.
Since the confusion was purely triggered by an accidental physical collision with the bowler, the Sri Lankan team hesitated initially. Wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella held the ball and looked out to captain Dhananjaya de Silva at slip to check if they should proceed with the appeal.
De Silva gestured to take the bails off, and after the TV umpires verified that Rahul had safely grounded his bat first, Jaiswal was officially given out.

The dismissal abruptly broke a solid 47-run opening partnership. Notably, this is the third time in his young Test career that Jaiswal has been dismissed via a run-out, following similar unfortunate mix-ups against Australia at the MCG in 2024 and against the West Indies in Delhi in 2025.
After Jaiswal’s wicket, Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal are rebuilding the Indian innings. The tourists reached 89/1 after 23 overs, with Rahul and Padikkal unbeaten on 27 and 28 respectively.
