Facing Sri Lankan spinner Dilum Sudeera in the final over of the day, Brar unleashed a spectacular power-hitting display by launching four massive sixes.
Devdutt Padikkal took a single off the first ball and gave the strike to Gurnoor, who smashed two maximums and then turned down a single to retain strike. He finished the over with two more sixes to remain unbeaten on 36 off just 18 balls.
Gurnoor Brar’s heroics with the bat left Gautam Gambhir visibly impressed in the dressing room as the Indian head coach clapped for the player with smile on his face.
The cameo from Brar propelled India's score to 357/6 in 90 overs. The visitors now sit just six runs behind Sri Lanka Cricket XI's first-innings declared total of 363/8.
Meanwhile, Padikkal stayed unbeaten on 142 and was the standout batter for India on the day, strengthening his case for a place in the playing XI for the opening Test in Galle.
With Sai Sudharsan ruled out of the series after failing to recover from his toe injury, Padikkal now seems front-runner to take up the No. 3 spot.
