SL v ENG 2018: Areas to improve on despite the series win, says England skipper Eoin Morgan

Morgan seeks betterment in all aspects of the game before the all-important World Cup next year.

England clinched their third consecutive win of the five-match ODI tussle, to seal the series 3-0 even before the final game. In another rain-curtailed encounter at Pallekele, England defeated Sri Lanka by 18 runs on DLS method and while he is pleased, skipper Eoin Morgan seeks improvement, as his team continues to build forward towards the ICC Cricket World Cup next year.

Talking about the fourth game, where England found themselves 132/2 after 27 overs, in pursuit of Sri Lanka's 273/7, before the rain brought an early end to the match, Morgan, who himself scored 31* and was subsequently awarded Man of the Match honours for his exploits, said, “I thought today was quite a scrappy game, to be honest, We had the better of the conditions having won the toss and bowled and I felt the wicket was a bit tacky and turned a little more than it probably did when we batted. But we felt that Sri Lanka crept up to a very competitive score. Credit to Sri Lanka, they fought back well."

"We are quite honest with where we’re at and where we need to improve. Today it was fielding, we were quite rusty, and we maybe could have been more disciplined in the areas that we bowled," he added.

With another series victory in the bag, Morgan also expressed willingness to use the final one-dayer as an opportunity to provide game time to the likes of Joe Denly, Sam Curran, Mark Wood and Liam Plunkett, who have been waiting for their chances.

"Just because we’ve won the series doesn’t mean that we don’t want to win the next game,” he added. "It’s an important game but also may be an opportunity to look at some other guys as well,” and signed off.

The final ODI takes place on Tuesday, October 23.
