South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first after the start of the play was delayed due to damp spots on the pitch and a wet outfield due to rain. David Bedingham and Nandre Burger made their Test debuts for South Africa, while Prasidh Krishna made his for India.
India lost their first wicket in the form of Rohit Sharma early, as he was caught at square leg off the bowling of Kagiso Rabada. Then Nandre Burger had Yashasvi Jaiswal caught by the keeper for his first Test wicket, as India became 23/2.
In walked Virat Kohli at no.4 to join Shubman Gill at the crease. However, as he was walking in down the stairs and onto the field, the crowd in Centurion gave him a loud ovation and claps and cheers filled the atmosphere.
